Learner Outcomes:

  • Be able to understand the importance of publication in the research process
  • Be able to understand the problems engendered by a twisted interpretation of the role of bibliometric tools such as the impact factor
  • Be aware of the importance of journal selection from technical and ethical points of view, and with the critical role of peer review as part of the scientific process

Arguments will be presented that after the completion of a study there still remain important steps before we can claim to have produced scientific evidence. These steps include the publication of the paper, to offer our research to the scrutiny of the scientific community. The bibliometric turn will be discusses together with the issue of predatory journals and the danger they pose to quality and credibility of research. I will then exemplify some of the obstacles that can be encountered in the publication effort, and look at them critically.
