The Advanced Practice Educator Aromatherapist (APEdA) Membership – Special Application Process

The AIA offers an advanced level of membership. The Education Committee established the guidelines for various levels of aromatherapy training, including training at the Advanced Practitioner level.

In Addition, the APEdU designation requires:

• Teach at recognized Level 3 AIA school or equivalent e.g., NAHA; IFPA; May teach a class as part of program(s)/ specialty/continuing education. Class may not be part of a Level III program, but content should be equivalent or greater to Level III content. Equivalency will be established with lesson plans/ CV support.
• Three letters of reference
• Minimum of three calendar years (does not have to be consecutive) active aromatherapy teaching experience with curriculum development participation. Educators may be teaching part time or full time. For example, teaching the same course once a year, for three years.
• Give two examples, within the last 5 years of a change to curriculum, course offerings, or instruction you have made based upon a student evaluation(s). Please use a short essay format to provide your response.
• Submit two Lesson Plans. Please include the following: learning outcomes, outline of lesson content, teaching strategies used, learning assessment, and any student evaluation methods used.
• Short Essay describing the applicant’s Educational (Teaching) Philosophy. 500 words. Philosophy Statement should include the following:
• The applicant’s core beliefs about teaching and learning.
• Description of how the applicant teaches (teaching style/methods).
• Why these teaching methods are used.
• Example of how applicant’s beliefs about teaching and learning, and their teaching methods are applied in the classroom.

• Upon renewal, 2 hours of the required 20 hours of CE must be in education, instruction, instructional design, curriculum development, or other teaching/education professional development related topics.
• Include the applicant’s current Curriculum Vitae (CV) with the application.

There is a non-refundable $25 fee that upon acceptance at the “AP” level will be applied to your annual dues which may be pro-rated, depending on when you apply and are approved.

The CE requirements are similar to those needed to maintain the Aromatherapy Registration Council (ARC) Registered Aromatherapist (RA™) credential, as well as maintaining a professional or clinical membership in an international aromatherapy organization; such as the IFA, IAAMA or IFPA.

What are the benefits of being an Advanced Practitioner of the AIA?

You will be able to use the initials APEdU after your name to indicate that your education in clinical aromatherapy meets the new standards for clinical aromatherapy training as outlined by the AIA.

Please note: The APEdA program does not negate the purpose of or the achievement of an RA™ status through the ARC.

Completed applications submitted will be first reviewed by the AIA Review Committee, who will then propose proper status to the Board for approval. Once the Board approves the recommendation from the Review Committee, the member will be notified by email within one week of the board meeting.
