Learner Outcomes:
- State why the Latin name is important
- State the resources to identify the current correct Latin binomial
- Demonstrate the acceptable format/structure of writing botanical names and common names
This one-hour lecture explores the critical importance of using correct botanical nomenclature—specifically the Latin binomial—when identifying plants that produce essential oils. Accurate naming ensures clarity, consistency, and safety in clinical practice, research, and education by distinguishing between closely related species with very different chemical profiles and therapeutic properties. Understanding and applying proper nomenclature is essential for ethical practice, effective communication, and the responsible use of essential oils.
