Teleconferences

AIA's Teleconference held on December 16, 2009.

Our Presenter:
Donna Whyte-English, MSN, FNP-BC, CCAP

Topic:
Clinical Aromatherapy for Behavior Management in Dementia

About the Teleconference:
Over 50% of individuals with dementia have behavioral or psychiatric symptoms;, which increase suffering for the person with dementia, the burden for care-givers, and the overall cost of care. The most commonly used conventional pyschotropic agents, neuroleptics and benzodiazepines, are often poorly tolerated, have a high incidence of side effects and can be costly. This teleconference focuses on using clinical aromatherapy as a safe and effective adjunct or alternative for dementia-related behavioral symptoms. We'll discuss case studies from the presentor's clinical practice, review relevant scientific literature, and talk about ways to incorporate essential oils into the care of elders.

Meet Donna Whyte-English
Donna Whyte-English is a board-certified family nurse practitioner, certified clinical aromatherapist, M Technique practitioner, Reiki provider, and an educator. She serves as the Northeast regional representative for the Alliance of International Aromatherapists and is the aromatherapy section editor for All Things Healing. She came to aromatherapy over 10 years ago after many years of dabbling in different complementary and alternative therapies during her 32 years of diverse nursing practice.

Donna received her basic aromatherapy training through RJ Buckle Associates. Her current nursing clinical practice is providing geriatric psychiatry consultation in nursing homes for a Massachusetts-based geriatric mental health company. Additionally, she maintains a private clinical aromatherapy practice, Holistic Aromatics.

Donna has developed a program for the use of clinical aromatherapy with elders, that specializes in aromatic solutions for elder care and the management of dementia-related behavioral symptoms. She recently completed a clinical trial measuring the effects of aromatherapy and music therapy on dementia-related behavioral symptoms. Her other aromatic interests include palliative and hospice care, psycho-spiritual transformation and animal aromatics.

Donna spends her leisure time making jewelry, including unique beaded aromatic necklaces and outdoors hiking, snowshoeing, kayaking and playing with her animals in Western Massachusetts.
